Heaps of information and stuff about The Trail of Painted Ponies. How it all started, how they were made, where to now and Painted Ponies Figurines and Gifts.

Well when I started researching Horse Lovers Gifts I can honestly say I had never even heard of ‘The Trail of Painted Ponies’. (I live in Australia - it had not reached me).

But now I’m a huge fan.

In the beginning I did find it difficult to get detailed information on these Painted Ponies. So after much searching I have put together a short article, to give you an idea of how they came into being.

Background

The trail came to life in 2001 in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was initiated by author/entrepreneur Rod Barker.

Artist Valerie Graves about to start He invited the very best artists in the Southwest to transform 120 life-sized horses into art. And the results were outstanding.

Although called ‘Painted Ponies’, paint is not the only medium used. Pottery, wood, iron and even seed beads were used to adorn the horses.

These horse sculptures took on a life of their own and these stunning works of art enchanted viewers of all ages.

Beautiful, Odd, Whimsical, Scary, Simplistic and Intricate are all ways to describe these delightful painted works.

Viewed by thousands of people the exhibit won National acclaim, and caused quite a stir in New Mexico (increased tourism and state revenues).

An auction was held to sell these incredible horse sculptures and $600,000.00 was raised for charity.

Then in 2002 a further $200,000 was raised for philanthropic organizations through the licensing agreement to craft 'Painted Ponies Figurines'.

Since then more distinguished artists have joined and further art exhibitions have been held across the USA.
